What to pack for a yoga retreat

Pack light, pack layers. This checklist covers what you need for most retreats, whether in the mountains, by the sea or in the countryside.

For practice

  • 3–4 sets of yoga clothes (they dry slowly in humid places)
  • A travel yoga mat or mat towel, if the venue does not provide mats (ask first)
  • A light blanket or shawl for meditation and relaxation
  • A refillable water bottle
  • A notebook and pen for journaling

Clothes

  • Warm layers: a fleece or jumper and socks for early mornings
  • Comfortable clothes for free time and excursions
  • Swimwear and a quick-dry towel
  • Sandals plus shoes for walking
  • A rain jacket in cooler or tropical climates

Toiletries and health

  • Natural sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Any medication, plus a copy of your prescription
  • Earplugs and an eye mask, especially in shared rooms
  • Plasters and a small first-aid kit for remote venues

Documents

  • Passport or ID, travel insurance details
  • Your booking confirmation and the organiser's phone number
  • Directions to the venue offline, as many retreats are remote

What to leave at home

Expensive jewellery, too many outfits and your work laptop. Many retreats have limited Wi-Fi, and that is a feature.

Frequently asked questions

Do yoga retreats provide mats?

Most do, along with blocks, straps and bolsters. Check the listing or ask the organiser. If you prefer your own, a 1–2 mm travel mat packs easily.
