How to choose a yoga retreat
The right retreat leaves you rested and inspired; the wrong one can feel like an expensive workout in the wrong place. These ten questions will help you choose.
What do you want from the trip?
Be honest about your goal. Rest and recovery points to yin, restorative or meditation retreats. Building strength or deepening your practice points to vinyasa or ashtanga. Adventure points to surf-yoga or hiking retreats. Personal growth may mean breathwork, women's circles or a teacher training.
Which style and level?
Read the description for the yoga style and the level. "All levels" usually means beginners are welcome, but a retreat with two 90-minute vinyasa classes a day is still physically demanding. See our retreat styles for a quick overview.
How many hours of yoga a day?
Most retreats offer two sessions a day, morning and late afternoon, totalling 2–4 hours. Intensives and teacher trainings may have 6–8 hours. Check whether classes are optional.
Who is the teacher?
Look for the teacher's training, how long they have taught and whether they have run retreats before. A good teacher answers your questions clearly and personally before you book.
How big is the group?
Small groups (6–15 people) feel more personal and teachers can give individual adjustments. Larger groups can be more social and lively.
What exactly is included?
Compare like with like: accommodation (shared or private room, en-suite or not), number of meals, airport transfers, excursions, treatments and equipment. Two retreats with the same price can offer very different value.
Where is it and how do you get there?
Consider total travel time and cost. A nearby weekend retreat can be more restful than a long-haul trip with jet lag.
What is the food like?
Most retreats serve vegetarian food; many are vegan. Tell the organiser about allergies and dietary needs before you book.
What are the payment and cancellation terms?
Ask how much deposit is needed, when the balance is due, and what happens if you or the organiser cancel. Get the terms in writing, and consider travel insurance that covers cancellation.
Does it feel right?
Read the description, look at the photos and send a message. The way an organiser answers tells you a lot about the experience.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book a yoga retreat?
Two to four months ahead is typical, and earlier for popular summer and holiday dates or small groups. Many organisers offer early-bird prices.
Is it OK to go on a yoga retreat alone?
Yes. Most participants travel solo, and a retreat is one of the easiest ways to travel alone because the group, meals and schedule are organised for you.
