Your first yoga retreat: what to expect
Nervous about your first yoga retreat? Most people are. Here is what a typical retreat looks like, so you can relax and enjoy it.
A typical day
- 7:00 – tea, then meditation or breathwork
- 7:30 – morning yoga (60–90 minutes, more active)
- 9:30 – brunch
- Midday – free time: beach, pool, hiking, treatments or a nap
- 17:00 – afternoon yoga (slower: yin, restorative or workshop)
- 19:00 – dinner, then perhaps a sound bath, fire circle or early night
Most retreats keep classes optional. Skipping one to rest is completely normal.
Do I need to be flexible or fit?
No. Flexibility comes from practice, not before it. Choose an all-levels or beginner retreat, tell the teacher about any injuries on day one, and use props freely.
Will I be the only beginner?
Very rarely. Retreat groups usually mix complete beginners with experienced students, and teachers plan for that.
Phones, silence and alcohol
Some retreats ask you to keep mornings silent, limit phone use or avoid alcohol. These rules are part of the experience; the description should mention them.
How to get the most out of it
Arrive a little early, keep your schedule light the day after you return, drink plenty of water, and try at least one thing that is new to you, such as meditation or a sound bath.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear on a yoga retreat?
Stretchy, breathable clothes for practice, warm layers for meditation and evenings, and comfortable clothes for free time. See our packing list.
Can I go on a yoga retreat if I have an injury?
Often yes, but tell the organiser before booking. A gentle style with an experienced teacher can be adapted for many injuries.
